Transition & Stability

The increasing frequency of extreme weather events in Canada has caused the annual payouts for catastrophic insurance claims to skyrocket, according to a recent Statistics Canada report. This is but one small piece of a global picture emerging, where extreme weather events are causing homeowner insurance to increase at a rate higher than inflation. In the worst case, climate change will cause insurance companies to go bankrupt and homeowners will have nowhere to turn. “Transitions happen shock-wise and are systemic,” said Dirk Schoenmaker, Professor at the Rotterdam School of Management. “What can we do to reduce transition risk?” He was speaking at a webinar […]

The Greenium

Does the average household want to invest in climate-friendly assets? If so, what proportion of assets are earmarked for green investments? What kinds of assets (equity or fixed income) are preferred? “Green investments are popular, but only about one-third of German households have some kind of green account,” said Monika Piazzesi, Professor of Economics at Stanford University. She was speaking at a webinar titled “Household Climate Finance: Theory and Survey Data on Safe and Risky Green Assets,” held on September 7, 2023, as part of the Virtual Seminar on Climate Economics sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco (FRBSF). Her […]

The Meerkat Way

Given that climate change is the biggest economic upheaval of our age, what can risk professionals do? What, exactly, is meant by a “net-zero transition,” and why does each organization need a transition plan to reach it? How should risk professionals get started? On May 23, 2023, the membership of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) was invited to a one-hour webinar titled “Net-Zero Transition Plans” that promised to answer these questions and more. Tony Rooke, Executive Director and Head of Transition Finance at the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), delivered the webinar. GFANZ is a global […]

Steering the Ship

“Board involvement is pivotal… It’s so much easier to get climate risk capability embedded,” said Jo Paisley, President of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). “Our survey found the vast majority of boards have oversight of climate-related risks and opportunities.” She was referring to the report titled Third Annual Global Survey of Climate Risk Management at Financial Firms available from the GARP website since September 2021. Paisley and two other panel members were part of the July 12, 2022, webinar to mark the publication of a joint report from GARP and the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI). The Future of Crypto

What’s been happening in the cryptocurrencies market? Is it all merely speculation or is crypto here to stay? What is the future of broader blockchain technologies? What could regulation mean for the world of decentralized finance (DeFi)? On February 24, 2022, Helen Joyce, Britain editor of the weekly magazine the Economist, posed questions to her colleagues: Alice Fulwood, Wall Street correspondent at the Economist, and Matthieu Favas, finance editor at the Economist, in order to explore the rise of cryptocurrency  and its potential consequences. “Blockchain can be thought of as a database distributed across many nodes,” Alice Fulwood said, “one […]

Net-Zero Buildings

How do we build our homes and cities for a sustainable future? Climate change is such a huge, complex problem that tackling it can seem overwhelming. Fortunately, many organizations are addressing various parts of this colossal puzzle. One aspect is the “built environment.” Can existing buildings be modified to cope with climate change? Can buildings be redesigned to have net zero effect on the environment? On July 1, 2021, a panel of experts gave their thoughts on matters relating to climate change and buildings, as part of the New York Times Climate Hub series of webinars. This is the “Built […]

WTO: The Jabs and the Jab-Nots

As the covid-19 vaccines continue to be rolled out across the world, and as trade disputes continue to fester, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has her work cut out for her as the new director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). With many years’ experience in politics, economics, and vaccine production, she already has a deep understanding of the issues. On June 29, 2021, she spoke with Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of the magazine the Economist, about ending the covid-19 pandemic and the future of globalization. Ngozi described herself as a “trade outsider” when she first began at the World Bank, “which has […]

Embrace the Alternative

In the world of finance, investors are constantly searching for new sources of information that could help them generate alpha. Many of them have recently turned to alternative data. But what, exactly, is alternative data? And why should investors (and those seeking a career in finance) care about it? On February 17, 2021, the Professional Development Committee at CFA Society Toronto convened a panel discussion to demystify the alternative data industry. Alexandra Zvarich, representing the committee, questioned the panellists about insights they could share, and how to prepare for a career in this area. “We worked with alternative data before […]

Find the Needle

With the Covid-19 pandemic still posing challenges to the economy and national health, many financial institutions are making changes to their recruiting mandates. How can they continue to attract the best candidates? How can they mitigate the restrictions of the pandemic when “in person” visits are at the heart of recruitment? “Recruitment is the proverbial case of finding the needle in a haystack,” said Bill Vlaad, President and CEO, Vlaad and Company. “Our job is not to go through hay, but to find the needle.” He was speaking at a webinar on December 17, 2020. The CFA Society Toronto convened […]

The Achilles Heel of Banking

After last decade’s financial crisis, regulators introduced several new measures to reduce systemic risk in the financial system. How are the new safeguards working? What are the implications for future balance sheet structure? The CFA Society Toronto convened a panel of three experts on November 25, 2020, to discuss the new regulatory capital and liquidity frameworks and how they are reshaping the way Canadian banks approach the market. The webinar, including a Q&A session, was moderated by Nigel D’Souza, Investment Analyst, Veritas Investment Research. “There’s no doubt the financial crisis changed balance sheets,” said Bruce Choy, Managing Director (Former Risk […]
